We train in Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, as taught by Tetsutaka Sugawara Sensei.
The style was founded by Iizasa Ienao in the 15th century and is one of the oldest extant Japanese martial arts. Katori Shinto Ryu is designated an intangible cultural asset by Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
Although Katori Shinto Ryu primarily emphasizes sword techniques, the curriculum also includes the study of Naginata (halberd), Bo (staff), Ryoto (two-swords), Kodachi (short sword), and Yari (spear), among other teachings. Katori Shinto Ryu also includes a unique set of 16 Iaijutsu Kata (sword drawing forms).
